Blue Gum loop trail

Williams River precinct rainforest loop with tall forest and river context. Southern access via Dungog / Salisbury Road corridor — a different drive day from Gloucester Tops.

Do not pair: Do not pair Blue Gum with Gloucester Tops circuit the same calendar day. Own southern precinct, or use the three-day multi-precinct itinerary.

Turnaround: Complete the signed Blue Gum loop and call it a successful southern day if the group is mixed, late, or wet. Rocky Crossing is optional only with daylight and safe water.

  • Threading this after a full eastern Tops morning — circling outside the park eats the walk.
  • Pushing toward Rocky Crossing after rain when creek crossings look wrong.

Official NSW National Parks pages and the sign in front of you override any guide page.

Where you start

Williams River picnic area

Start from the Williams River picnic precinct when open. Confirm signed loop and any flood-related closures.

How to get there

  1. Southern Barrington: from Dungog take Chichester Dam Road then Salisbury Road toward Lagoon Pinch / Williams River. [VERIFY] live road conditions.
  2. Not connected by internal car roads to Gloucester Tops or Polblue — plan as its own precinct.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Check alerts for track and river conditions. Walk the signed Blue Gum loop.
  2. Grip shoes for wet timber and roots. Carry water even on short forest loops.
  3. Optional extension toward Rocky Crossing only if fitness, daylight and status allow — it is a longer Grade 4 commitment.

What to expect

Blue Gum loop is the default honest southern rainforest day: tall forest, river context and a signed loop from the Williams River picnic precinct when open. Distance and grade are planning-only until you [VERIFY] live NPWS figures for your date.

It is not a substitute for Gloucester Tops, and it is not “close” to Polblue by car. Treat Dungog as the logistics town and this walk as its own precinct product.

Southern access discipline

From Dungog, follow signed Chichester Dam / Salisbury Road corridor approaches toward Lagoon Pinch / Williams River. Road surface and flood risk change after rain — reverse if access looks wrong.

Free vehicle day entry is commonly published; camping remains NPWS-only. Screenshot Park Alerts and the track page before you leave reception.

Rocky Crossing extension

Optional extension toward Rocky Crossing is a longer Grade 4 commitment with creek risk — only when fitness, daylight and river levels all allow. Agree a turnaround time before you leave the picnic area.

If the group is mixed or the weather is wet, complete Blue Gum only and call it a successful southern day.

Kit after the walk plan is solid: packing / gear hub. Official NPWS advice and on-site signs come first. Park fees never affiliated.

Extra tips

  • Pair with Dungog as a gateway stay.
  • Leeches possible after wet weather — repellent and gaiters help.

Often paired with Rocky Crossing— only if energy and weather allow.
