What ruins a first visit here: treating Gloucester Tops, Polblue and Williams River as one compact loop. Precincts are not linked by car-suitable through-roads inside the park — circling on public roads takes hours. Pick one precinct per day, pack for altitude (the park rises to over 1500 m), and do not mix free vehicle entry with “free camping.”

Gloucester Tops circuit
hardSignature eastern Barrington day walk combining Gloucester Falls, river and Antarctic beech forest tracks into a full circuit from Gloucester Falls picnic area. NPWS lists 8 km loop, Grade 4, 3–5 hours. Not a first casual stroll — mud, roots and altitude weather are normal. Always check local alerts before you drive up.

Polblue Swamp
easyShort high-altitude wetland loop from Polblue campground / picnic area (NPWS: 3 km, Grade 3, 30 min–1 hr). Snow gums, swamp habitat and a calmer introduction to the plateau than Careys Peak. Watch for feral horses; book camping only via NPWS if staying overnight.

Careys Peak
hardLong Grade 4 return walk to Careys Peak lookout and high-country escarpment views. NPWS lists 14 km return and a full-day time window. Vehicle staging often depends on the Barrington trail (open to vehicles 1 October–31 May only — temporary closures still apply). Not a casual add-on to a Gloucester Tops morning.

Is there an entry fee for Barrington Tops National Park?
Free park entry for vehicles — Barrington Tops is not on the NPWS fee-collecting parks list (re-checked 12 August 2026). Camping and some remote sites are separate NPWS bookings and fees. This site never affiliates park entry or official camping.
Can I visit Gloucester Tops and Polblue in the same day?
Usually a bad plan. There is no practical internal car through-road linking eastern, plateau and southern precincts. Circling on public roads takes hours. Pick one precinct per day unless you have a multi-day trip with overnight stays near each area.
What should I do on a first visit?
Most first-timers basing near Gloucester should plan a Gloucester Tops day: river-crossing discipline on the access, then the signature circuit if fit and open, or shorter falls / Antarctic beech options. Match the gateway to the trailhead — Dungog for Williams River, Scone/Thunderbolts for the plateau.
Is mobile reception reliable?
No. Official visitor info stresses limited mobile reception. Triple Zero (000) needs a working mobile path. Download Emergency+, offline maps and leave trip intentions. Consider a satellite messenger for remote parties.
