Barrington Tops walks & trails

Start with a clear easy plateau vs Grade 4 day choice. Gloucester Tops circuit and Careys Peak both need a proper access plan, not a vague “we’ll figure it out.” Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on NSW National Parks and park alerts. Weather, river crossings and road status change.

Decide before you lace up

  • Easy plateau loops: Polblue Swamp, Honeysuckle Forest — still pack altitude layers and expect limited reception.
  • Eastern signature day: Gloucester Tops circuit (~8 km Grade 4 when open), or falls / beech Plan B for mixed groups.
  • Hard / seasonal high country: Careys Peak — Barrington trail access window and weather first, not a casual add-on.
  • Southern rainforest: Blue Gum loop; Rocky Crossing only when open, dry enough and fit — own drive day from Dungog.

Stacking two hard walks across different precincts is the classic first-visit failure mode. Pick the table row that matches energy and gateway town, then open the full trail guide for getting-there detail.

Gloucester Tops circuit

hard

Signature eastern Barrington day walk combining Gloucester Falls, river and Antarctic beech forest tracks into a full circuit from Gloucester Falls picnic area. NPWS lists 8 km loop, Grade 4, 3–5 hours. Not a first casual stroll — mud, roots and altitude weather are normal. Always check local alerts before you drive up.

Careys Peak

hard

Long Grade 4 return walk to Careys Peak lookout and high-country escarpment views. NPWS lists 14 km return and a full-day time window. Vehicle staging often depends on the Barrington trail (open to vehicles 1 October–31 May only — temporary closures still apply). Not a casual add-on to a Gloucester Tops morning.

Trails FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Which walk should first-timers do?

Most first-timers start with Gloucester Tops (full circuit if fit, or shorter falls/beech segments) or an easy Polblue Swamp loop on the plateau. Careys Peak needs seasonal trail access and Grade 4 fitness — not a default first day. Always verify track status with NSW National Parks.

Can I stack Gloucester Tops and Careys Peak in one day?

Usually a bad plan. They sit in different access systems and Careys Peak is a full-day Grade 4 commitment when access works. Pick one hero walk and protect reverse time.

Are distances and grades guaranteed?

No. Figures on this site are planning ranges from public materials. Always [VERIFY] live distance, grade, time and open/closed status on official NPWS pages and Park Alerts.
