Where you start
Gloucester Falls picnic area
Signed falls and lookout tracks from the picnic area when open.
How to get there
- Eastern access from Gloucester via Gloucester Tops Road — river-crossing caveats after rain.
How to do it (step by step)
- Stay behind barriers at lookouts. Wet rock is slick.
- Optional upgrade to full circuit only if fitness and daylight allow.
What to expect
Gloucester Falls tracks give lookout and waterfall drama from the picnic area without automatically committing to the full ~8 km Grade 4 circuit. Wet rock and cliff edges are real — barriers exist for a reason.
Many groups use this as Plan B when energy, weather or river-crossing delays make the full circuit unwise. [VERIFY] live distance, grade and open status on NPWS.
Access and reverse clock
Same eastern Gloucester Tops Road approach as the circuit — river crossings after rain can force a reverse before you ever lace boots. Fuel and alert checks in Gloucester first.
Budget daylight for the drive out. A late falls stop that leaves you on flood-prone access after dark is a planning failure, not bad luck.
When to upgrade to the circuit
Upgrade only if the group is Grade 4-ready, the circuit is open, and you still have reverse buffer. Do not invent a “quick circuit” after a late start.
Pairing falls with Antarctic beech segments can still fill a solid day without the full loop — stay on signed links only.
Kit after the walk plan is solid: packing / gear hub. Official NPWS advice and on-site signs come first. Park fees never affiliated.

Extra tips
- Great for groups who want drama without a Grade 4 full loop.
Often paired with Gloucester Tops circuit— only if energy and weather allow.
