Where you start

Honeysuckle picnic area

Signed short loop from the Honeysuckle picnic precinct when open. Confirm facilities on the day.

How to get there

  1. Plateau corridor via Barrington Tops Forest Road approaches from Gloucester or Scone. Gravel corrugations common.
  2. Pair with Polblue for a gentle plateau day; do not stack Careys Peak unless logistics and fitness are already solved.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Stay on the signed track. Expect damp understorey and mossy timber after rain.
  2. Carry a light shell; forest is cooler than open gravel car parks.
  3. Pack out rubbish; respect picnic area facilities.

What to expect

Honeysuckle Forest is a short, signed plateau loop through cool temperate understorey — Antarctic beech, tree ferns and damp forest light. Public materials describe it as an easy add-on rather than a full-day hero walk. Always [VERIFY] live distance and grade on the NPWS track page.

It rewards mixed-ability groups who want rainforest character without committing to Careys Peak or a Grade 4 circuit. It still sits at altitude: chill, mud after rain and limited reception are normal.

Logistics and pairing

Approach via plateau corridor roads from Gloucester (Thunderbolts Way context) or Scone / Moonan approaches. Gravel corrugations are common; allow real drive time from town fuel.

Best pairing is Polblue Swamp the same day when both tracks are open. Do not invent a Careys Peak “quick add” unless access, fitness and daylight already support a full Grade 4 commitment.

Reverse and failure modes

If fog erases views, the forest walk still counts as success — reverse when weather or fatigue demands, not when Instagram is disappointed.

Leave with a dry layer in the car. Plateau evenings cool fast even after a short loop.

Kit after the walk plan is solid: packing / gear hub. Official NPWS advice and on-site signs come first. Park fees never affiliated.

Extra tips

  • Great for mixed-ability groups.
  • Photo-friendly tree ferns — still keep people moving on busy weekends.

Often paired with Polblue Swamp— only if energy and weather allow.
