Polblue Swamp track

Short high-altitude wetland loop from Polblue campground / picnic area (NPWS: 3 km, Grade 3, 30 min–1 hr). Snow gums, swamp habitat and a calmer introduction to the plateau than Careys Peak. Watch for feral horses; book camping only via NPWS if staying overnight.

Do not pair: Honest same-day pair is Honeysuckle Forest when both tracks are open — not Careys Peak “because we are already up here” unless access, fitness and daylight already support a full Grade 4 day.

Turnaround: Stay on boardwalk/track even if orchids look better off-path. If horses act aggressively, give space and retreat toward a vehicle — the loop is optional, safety is not.

  • Under-packing for plateau wind and cold because Gloucester or Scone felt mild at breakfast.
  • Crowding or feeding feral horses, or leaving children unsupervised near them (NPWS publishes aggressive-horse advice).

Official NSW National Parks pages and the sign in front of you override any guide page.

  • Grade 3 (NPWS; short plateau wetland loop)
  • 30 minutes – 1 hour suggested (NPWS)
  • 3 km loop (NPWS, re-checked 2026-08-12)
  • Effort: easy
  • Best for: Families and first plateau visits; wetlands, snow gums, spring orchids

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on NSW National Parks (nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/barrington-tops-national-park) and Park Alerts before you go.

Where you start

Polblue campground & picnic area

Start at the signed Polblue Swamp track near the campground/picnic precinct. Confirm facilities and any temporary closures on the day.

How to get there

  1. Northern plateau access from Gloucester via Thunderbolts Way / Scone Road / Barrington Tops Forest Road, or from Scone via Moonan approaches. Gravel conditions vary.
  2. Not linked by car-suitable internal roads to Gloucester Tops or Williams River — plan as its own precinct day.
  3. Vehicle entry commonly free; camping at Polblue is separate NPWS booking only.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Check Park Alerts. Walk the signed loop; stay on boardwalk/track to protect swamp vegetation.
  2. Carry layers — altitude is real even on an “easy” walk.
  3. Give feral horses space; never feed or crowd them.
  4. Spring orchids reward slow walking; keep dogs out of the park.

What to expect

Polblue is the plateau’s friendly face: a short wetland loop among snow gums, popular with families and campers. Short distance does not mean low-altitude weather — pack a shell. Stay on the track; NPWS notes the swamp edge is vulnerable to trampling.

Spring can bring ground orchids and wildflowers. Summer still needs sun protection on open sections; winter can be stark and cold.

Feral horses etiquette

Feral horses move through the Polblue campground and track area day and night. NPWS has published visitor safety advice for aggressive behaviour (snorting, stomping, approaching). Set tents close to vehicles when camping; retreat to a vehicle if animals act aggressively.

Watch from a distance; never feed, chase or corner animals. Keep children close and dogs nowhere near the park. Report aggressive behaviour to NPWS Gloucester (02 6538 5300) or Scone (02 6540 2300).

Kit after the walk plan is solid: packing / gear hub. Official NPWS advice and on-site signs come first. Park fees never affiliated.

Extra tips

  • Excellent first plateau stop before committing to harder walks.
  • Combine with Honeysuckle Forest short loop if energy remains and roads are open.
  • Screenshot alerts while you still have reception on the drive in.

Often paired with Honeysuckle Forest— only if energy and weather allow.
